It keeps coming back to me. The story my aunt shared with my mom...who shared it with me. You may have heard me tell it at the meeting, but I think it is worth telling again.
My aunt teachers kindergartners in Sunday school at her church. One of her children is a feisty little girl who loves coming to church and has attached herself to my sweet aunt.
One Sunday morning they are learning about seeing God. Looking for God in our world and the little girl says..."Mrs. Nonie, I just don't see God. I have looked for him everywhere but I can't see him". My aunt looks at her and says, "I do. I see him in your eyes every Sunday morning."
The little girl runs to the mirror, stares at her reflection and then asks..."Is he in the brown part?"
The story is a funny one of a child trying to make sense out of an invisible God. We laugh...but isn't it the journey we are all taking...to see God in our lives, the lives of those we love. We stare hard into the reflections of our circumstances and situations and wonder...is he there in the good...the bad...the hard?
The creation story in Genesis says we are created in his image, the very image of Christ. I don't know about you but my image falls really short so many times. That's the mystery and miracle of Jesus. He is like my aunt looking at us and smiling...I see God in you. We study our reflection and wonder how that can be.
Some truths we just have to swallow down...letting them take root...growing to produce fruit in our lives. The easy task is to see God in others, in creation, in the eyes of a child...the difficult one is to see God working within our own selves. But he is...and he does...and I am thankful that he sees what I cannot.
