Why I think observing Lent is a great family discipline...

I don't really remember observing Lent as a child.  If my parents taught us about the season, I don't remember.  It was just something that the church talked about before Easter.  In fact I didn't take it very seriously until I was much older.  During my first year of teaching I car pooled with a friend who was Catholic.  She inspired me "to give up something" for Lent and so began my first observance.

Sometimes it seems sort of mysterious...this season of Lent.  Lent is a period of time we spend getting ready for Easter...preparing ourselves for the resurrection.  Think about how much time we spend getting ready for Christmas.   We decorate our houses, give gifts, and cook special treats.  Why not Lent too?

The season of Lent looks a little different each year at the Boyer household.  We've been known to plant a resurrection garden complete with a miniature tomb.  One year we decorated a tree with Easter decorations.  At family suppers we light the candles on the Lenten wreath and read scripture.
Some of those in our family fast during Lent.  We often spend time discussing how God is using the fast to teach us...help us focus on Him.  We celebrate the Sabbath with lunch after church and rejoice in a day of rest from our fasting.

I think observing Lent is an awesome opportunity for families to grow in their faith.  With two parents and three kids it often feels like we are going in a thousand directions.  Observing Lent gives us the chance to come together with one focus.  We get to share in a way unlike any other time of year.
