Only a little sling,
Only a boy named David,
But he could pray and sing.
Only a boy named David,
Only a rippling brook,
Only a boy named David,
But five little stones he took.
Those were the words we sung this morning in chapel. I shared with the children about a boy who God inspired to bravery. How he took his sling and defeated a giant. Little eyes were all fixed as I talked about the boy defeating lions and bears. It draws them in every time. Is it really possible for a boy to conquer a giant? He only had a sling and five stones...really?
David was only a boy. He had only a sling and five stones. He only...only...only. Those four little letters describe my own limitation. After all there is only so much money, or time, or ______________(you fill in this one.)
David knew the secret to limitation. He could pray and sing. He worshipped God out there in the field among the sheep. That worship prepared him to focus on God...not his limitations.
We are almost through with our chapel time and I usually ask for a volunteer to pray. Before I could get the words out of my mouth, the little one with brown eyes wide says, "Mrs. Stacy, can I pway for you?" I smiled to hold the tears at bay.
The four year old wants to pray for me...for me! He didn't see his age as a limit or the fact that he might not say the right words. In that moment he was David...praying, singing...focused on the One who takes our "only" and does the impossible.
Lord, help me be more like David. I want to sing and praise you instead of focusing on my "only". I give you all my limitations today and ask you to do what I cannot. Show me how to love you and love others...amen.
