Today we focus our studies on Esther. We will talk about how she became queen and the preparation it took for her to become royalty. Esther was a lady who knew how to prepare for the things God was asking her to do. I believe her preparation to speak to the king opened the door for her to save her people.
Lent is all about preparation too. No, its true, you won't find the word in the scriptures, but the spiritual discipline of observing Lent has been around a long time.

Many of us give up something for the season of Lent. Some observe the same fast each year. One staff member of our church gives up chocolate each year. For me, each year looks different. In years past I've given up television...sweets...caffeine. As my kids have grown they have also began to fast. The day before Ash Wednesday (that's tomorrow) we discuss what God has placed on our hearts to do and share why we have chosen this particular fast. Observing Lent is not mandatory around our house, and I rarely place much focus on times when we mess up. For us it is all about preparing our hearts...remembering what Jesus did for us...receiving grace.
Today we will offer an opportunity to observe Lent a little differently. Heifer International is a ministry near and dear to our hearts. This ministry gives farm animals and training to people in need of food or income. The animals sent to Heifer Project families provides nutritious food for children through milk, eggs, and meat. Children will be encouraged to Fill the Ark by placing coins in a special bank throughout the season of Lent. Each child will be coming home with a special bank and calendar this afternoon. The Wednesday before Easter we will bring our banks back for a time of celebration.
