Favorite of the Week...so far

At lunch yesterday I say to my group, "Tonight we are having beans and rice for supper." They look at me and then the questions begin.

"We are only having beans and rice?" the one with glasses asks.

"Yes, remember this is our mission project. The money we save will go to feed hungry people in Haiti."

"What sides will we have with the beans and rice?"

To their surprise I answer none and no desert either.

"Well what if you don't like beans and rice?" they ask.

I shrug my shoulders and remind the girls..."this is not about what you like, many people all over the world eat beans and rice for every meal or nothing at all. This is our sacrifice to help feed them."

I realize they just don't get it, yet. At dinner reality begins to sink in. Some get beans and rice and eat nothing. Some just want rice, others just beans. They finish and tell me they are still hungry. (We must have eaten 2000 calories already, I am not sure we will really be hungry for days.)

Today we go to missions...enter a room with funnels and bags, dried veggies and vitamin packs...scales and bins. The kids work and they are having fun. One says this feels good making a meal for someone who is hungry.

My favorite picture so far is this one.

Four little hands sealing plastic bags, working together to benefit someone else, getting nothing in return. This picture...it is the picture of Jesus in action.

A gong rings and the leader tells us every time it rings we have made 1000 meals. Throughout the hour it rings four more times. I see Jorja at the snow cone shack...their group heard the gong ring eight times.

The gong rings over and over again this week as thousands of meals are prepared, sealed, counted, boxed. The gong is music to my ears.
