Growing Youth

Sunday was a big day.  One of my favorite times of the year is Youth Sunday at our church.  It is the one day where youth lead worship and that evening we celebrate with dinner and an auction to raise funds for the teens in our church.

Being a part of the youth group at our church has never been an option in our home.  It is just what we do.  For us it is important for many reasons but the main one is that I believe it helps my teens grow spiritually.  I watch the teens in a sea of green shirts read scripture and lead the Lord's prayer.  I see them sing and teach the children's sermon.  Later they serve others and share their gifts and talents during dinner.

A youth group is a place where life long friends are made and being a part of the body of Christ becomes real.  A youth trip is the place where my oldest committed her life to following Jesus.
They don't always want to go..what kid always wants to do what their parents require?  My sister-in-law was a part of the youth group I led.  She never wanted to come...would put up quite a fuss over the whole ordeal.  The seeds planted in her life then...they are producing fruit now.

Teens are usually hesitant to try something new.  To walk into a group where they think they will not know anyone.  The first time is the hardest.  Do you have a teen in your home?  Could it be time to help them get involved in a youth group somewhere.  I believe it is worth it.  If you don't have a group at your church, I invite you to try the one here at First United Methodist on Wednesdays at 6:00.
