If you know me you will not be surprised by the fact that children's sermons just kind of come at some point during the week. It has been a journey in learning to trust that inspiration will come and trusting God to reveal his plan for each Sunday. There have been times when I am a few weeks ahead but for the most part...it is a week by week process. I ask God and then I wait.
This week was no different, I seek God for the idea and by Sunday morning as I am brushing my teeth I am wondering if I missed it, or haven't been listening. Children's Sunday proves to be a busy time...the choir is singing, ukuleles are being tuned, children gather for Sunday school, a call is made to make sure the pizza is on schedule. I have a few minutes for a break and realize...still nothing.
By this time I am getting a little nervous...I think, "Lord, I got nothin" here...any ideas?"
Realizing I cannot hide in the restroom forever...off I go...no inspiration...no words...not even an idea.
Children are gathering to sit together and I choose a row full of kindergartners. The brown haired little one turns his back and says, "Don't look at what I am doing." A few minutes later he hands me an envelope and wants me to open it.
Inside was a card...in the handwriting style only kindergartners can pull off...a message...I Love You.
Worship begins and children give a message, we sing Lord, I Lift Your Name on High, two young ones read the scripture and I cannot stop smiling.
I smile because I am relieved...finally an idea...and still ten minutes to spare.
I smile because God never lets me down.
I smile because who wouldn't when little ones sing "Lord , you are good" and dance and clap...not even caring if they are off beat.
I smile wide because worship is like sending notes to the one who never lets you down...in your best kindergarten handwriting...I love you.
