Spray Can with No Words

Have you ever dug around in the cabinets or garage through the spray cans and found one without a label?  One that was so  dirty or rusted you had no idea what was on the inside.  I have noticed lately that everything we have from cleaners to food packaging and even hair spray has a label complete with information about

...what's inside
...how to use it
...cautions about the dangers of using it

I thought that bringing this can with the label hidden might make a point.  And so the children come to the front of the sanctuary and we discuss what might be in this can with no label.

Maybe it is hair spray?  But what if was paint and you used it on your hair...not good.
Or it could be a wasp spray?  But how would you know for sure?

I wondered what would we do with these cans with no words.  Me, I would just push it to the back of the shelf...looking to find something else that could give me the information I need to use it effectively.

Following Jesus without his word is a lot like having a can with no label.  You are not sure what to do, or how to be...you do not have a measuring line for what it means to follow Him.

I challenged the little ones to read their Bibles this week.  Read it to yourself, or your parents, or your grandparents...read it to your brothers or sisters I said.  We pray and begin to leave.  The little one with the striped dress and glitzy shoes has a very serious look on her face.

Eyes wide she says, "I can't read".

That little one inspired me to challenge all those who CAN read.   Find your Bible...open it up...and READ.  Read it to yourself...read it to the children you find in your life.  Just read because you can.

"As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."  Isaiah 55: 10-11
