Time to Make the Donuts

Popular in the 80's which  reveals my age was this donut commercial.   The man headed out the door each day saying, "Time to make the donuts".  Some days he was not so cheery about getting up early, putting on the uniform, and making donuts.

There are times even today you will hear my mom use that phrase..."time to make the donuts".  These words for me became a reminder that those things I might not want to do...the things that seemed ordinary...still had to be done.

Throughout the scriptures God shows up in the ordinary business of life.  He called Moses while he was tending sheep.  Gideon was threshing wheat.  Peter was fishing.  They weren't waiting for God to show up.  They were simply doing the ordinary things of life when God revealed himself to them.

As I did this little exercise this morning in my daily devotional I was struck by how it has changed my outlook this Monday morning.  And so I challenge you to do the same.  Quick grab a piece of paper and a pen.

List five ordinary tasks you perform on a daily basis.  One of mine is trying to figure out what I will cook for supper each night.  I scan the recipes on the Internet and look for ideas in cookbooks, but it all just seems blah...certainly not appetizing.  This was tops on the list.

The author of my devotional says this:

"If we'll look around, we might find Him preparing us as He works through our daily lives.  Today's tasks--even the most mundane of them--are often preparation for tomorrow's calling.  They carry clues to what He is leading us to learn and accomplish as we faithfully serve Him.  God is teaching you faithfulness, diligence, and integrity through every task."--Priscilla Shirer

Now glance back at your list.  What blessings do you see in those mundane tasks?  Giving thanks for having choices in what food I prepare for my family has given me a new perspective.  How often do I complain about the very blessings I have been given?

I rise from my chair to begin the task of today and I hear her voice in my head..."its time to make the donuts".  Yes it is...maybe that's what we can have for supper tonight!
